Some athletes naturally excel at producing high speed, while others thrive on sustained efforts. Understanding where you sit on the speed–endurance continuum allows your coaches to individualize training and better prepare athletes for race demands.

The Speed–Endurance Balance

Training speed within an endurance framework is challenging. Pure sprinters won’t succeed if they’re dropped before the final effort, while endurance-only athletes often struggle when races become tactical. Research shows that anaerobic speed reserve (ASR) is a key factor in sports requiring repeated accelerations, making it a valuable quality to develop.

Tailoring Training

  • Speed-dominant athletes often benefit from shorter intervals and repeated efforts, even during endurance-focused sessions, to achieve the desired stimulus without excessive fatigue.

  • Endurance-dominant athletes usually respond better to longer intervals at the same intensity, allowing them to fully reach steady-state efforts.

Adjusting interval structure—rather than intensity alone—ensures all athletes receive an appropriate and effective training load.
